YEAR OF THE WATER SNAKE

2013:  Year of The Water Snake
The Year for Transforming in the Way of the Shaman
By Richard Giles

Welcome to another New Year. The Chinese New Year of 2013 began in February on Sunday 10th at the New Moon and is the beginning of the traditional lunar Chinese calendar. The New Year begins another new zodiac animal cycle, the Year of the slippery and philosophical Snake. Chinese tradition employs both Solar and Lunar calendars and at the Solar calendar, it begins 5th February but the New Moon day of 10th February begins all the official Lunar New Year celebrations and parties.
2012 was theYear of the Water Dragon and what a full-on powerful year!  Now in the cycle of the twelve comes the most interesting and fascinating but most terrifying of all the animals of the zodiac, the supple and dynamic Snake.  Its considered that the Snake possesses quasi magical powers so he is a sensitive and very intuitive. Those born in the Snake year are considered intelligent and philosophical people who give out a calm and peaceful demeanour and love stability. When motivated they will move heaven and earth to achieve what they are after.
SNAKE QUALITIES and The MYTHOLOGY
The Snake, the Chinese say, is one of the great animals of the planet and is the sign of creation, dreams and magic. The Snake is the companion of sorcerers and seers and its symbol is the circle, and thus it pertains to the infinite and to all esoteric knowledge. In the eastern cultures the Snake represents Kudalini energy which is the subtle energy that circulates from the base of the spine to the top of the skull connecting all the vital centres in the body. The awakening of Kundalini energy is one of the decisive steps in spiritual unfolding that arouses your more subtler powers and develops extrasensory powers such as clairvoyance and telepathy. It offers you the insight necessary to understand the world from a greater level. In all older traditions and cultures the Snake is a creator being.
In Hindu traditions its the Naga serpents who make and control the world energy. Naga  is the Sanskrit word for a deity or class of entity or being, taking the form of a large serpent, found in Hinduism and Buddhism. The Naga primarily represents rebirth, death and mortality, due to its casting off its skin and being symbolically “reborn”. In Australian aboriginal mythology its the Rainbow Serpent who moves across the landscape to create. Serpent is a word of Latin origin from serpens, serpentis, (something that crawls or creeps, a snake) that is commonly used in a specifically mythic or religious context. Snakes have been associated with some of the oldest rituals known to humankind.  Serpents are represented as potent guardians of temples and other sacred spaces. Thus, they are natural guardians of treasures or sacred sites which cannot easily be moved out of harm’s way.

At Angkor Wat in Cambodia, numerous stone sculptures present hooded multi-headed Nagas as guardians of temples or other premises. A favourite image of Angkorean sculptors from  the 12th century AD onward was that of the Buddha, sitting in the position of meditation, his body supported by the coils of a multi-headed Naga that also uses its flared hood to shield him from above.    Even in the USA the symbol is used. The Gadsden flag of the American Revolution depicts a rattlesnake coiled up and poised to strike. Below the image of the snake is the legend, “Don’t Tread on Me.”

In Mayan/Aztec culture Quetzalcoatl was sometimes depicted as biting his own tail. The mother of Quetzalcoatl was the Aztec goddess Coatlicue (“the one with the skirt of serpents”), also known as Cihuacoatl (“The Lady of the serpent”). Quetzalcoatl’s father was Mixcoatl (“Cloud Serpent”). He was identified with the Milky Way, the stars and the heavens in several Mesoamerican cultures. I

In our western culture we fear the snake and its appearance strikes terror into so many people. Fear of Snakes is a common occurrence is cultures that do not understand the snake’s role. Most snakes do not attack but only defend their territory or bite when trodden on. In Australia 95% of people who get bitten are attacking or interfering with the snake at the time.Snake people are not outwardly emotional, they are more contemplative and private.  They usually act according to their own ideas and do not follow others’ views. They can appear cunning and reticent and work very modestly in a business environment.  They can plot and scheme to make some things turn out exactly as they want them to.  They are not great communicators and can become too possessive when they set their minds on getting a partner.Snake people are too easily stressed and need to avoid hectic schedules or noisy atmospheres.  They need calm and quiet to thrive and succeed.  They must have sleep, relaxation, and plenty of peace to live a long, and healthy life.
People born in the year of the Snake are often very sophisticated and cultured in their choices for the home.  They are elegant and graceful and place emphasis on their comfort when deciding what to decorate with.  They are materialistic and often need to have as many of everything as possible. Their years are – 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025.They become bored easily and therefore change jobs quite frequently.  But are very conscientious and diligent at work.  They are organised and precise, cautious and alert when doing business.  They act confidently, calmly and have a strong sense of responsibility and very clear goals.Snakes are generally people of refinement who adore ancient objects, inlaid furniture and delicately coloured persian carpets, preferably just a little worn. Their taste is faultless, they understand the harmony of colour and shape. Everything in a Snake’s home is designed to be comfortable and put there for a treat to the senses. Though if you look inside his/her cupboards you may find some of them in disarray. Wherever he goes he must redecorate to suit his tastes. This is why it is difficult to live with a Snake because they have trouble adapting to tastes that are not their own.
BEING IN LOVE WITH A SNAKE
The ideal partner for a Snake is one who is unconditionally faithful. They are passionate,  fascinating and seductive people and know, what they want, they get. They have an astonishing ability to persuade others. Being with a Snake its important to be able to maintain some independence as that’s what the Snake person values most. If you can do that even though he/her will complain, he will respect you for it. If you want to please him give him a rare work of art, a rare book or a special music collection. He dislikes fakes and non-genuine items.

Snakes get on well with Oxen, Monkeys, Goats, Dragons, Rabbits, and Roosters. They are reasonable with Rats, Dogs and Horses. They have trouble with other Snakes (they can’t live together), Tigers and Pigs. The worst relationship problems are often with Tigers and other Snakes.

WHAT Is The SNAKE YEAR ALL ABOUT?

The ELEMENTS of The YEAR

The year is always made up of two parts, the Chinese animal sign and the year element. The Year of the Snake is symbolised by two elements – with Water sitting on top of Fire.   According to the Five Elements cycle of birth and destruction, which governs the interrelationship between the elements, Water is the destroyer of Fire and so they are in a negation cycle and have a conflicting relationship. Its like as in the year of Dragon in 2012 which was Water over Earth – conflicting elements. Conflicting elements means the year will still not be peaceful with more conflicts and political social struggles going on.

Yin Fire is also a symbol of electricity and lighting and when its in a clash, there’s the possibility of blackouts in electricity supplies.  There’s strong indications that 2013 is the years when the solar cycle will come to another peak and there’ll be large solar flares causing possible disruption of our electricity supplies.  So be prepared with your solar power, candles, your gas bottle supplies and gas powered fridge.

The Chinese calendar works on 60 year cycle. We have experienced the Yin Water Snake in 1953.  This was the year when the Korean War ended, Queen Elizabeth II was crowned, and Stalin suffered a stroke and died.  It was the cold war, and hostility between USSR and the USA continued, and both were hurrying to develop their nuclear arsenal.  So Yin Water brought apparent peace but there was tension and hostility underneath.

In the 1953 Water Snake year, both USSR and the USA engaged in a race to test nuclear weapons and expand their nuclear arsenals.  Its not to be surprising in 2013 if the hot international issue will still be the development of nuclear weapons in Iran as well as North Korea, and perhaps elsewhere. One of the other interesting events of 1953 was that a Health Report attributed lung cancer to cigarette smoking for the first time.  Looking at the element makeup, cigarettes are Fire element and cancer is considered in Chinese medicine to be excessive moisture in body cells – Water element.

1953 was the year when Playboy magazine was first issued, the first James Bond novel; ‘Casino Royale’ was published, and Walt Disney’s feature film ‘Peter Pan’ was premiered in 1953.  Creative inventions are key with Yin Water. The first colour TV went on sale in USA in December and  the Academy Awards were broadcast on TV for the first time. And it was  the year when the DNA structure was discovered.

Water sitting on the Fire Snake is warm and this can trigger serious weather phenomena such as cyclones, hurricanes and tornados.  Two essential ingredients creating hurricanes and tornadoes are warm water and warm moist air. These are both fulfilled in year of Yin Water Snake.  What happened in 1953?  In September, a huge typhoon occurred in South East Asia with over 1000 people killed. In May 1953, a tornado hit Waco in Texas USA, killing 114 people.  In June, another huge tornado killed 115 people in Michigan and then it moved into Massachusetts and killed another 95 people. We can expect similar dramatic weather phenomena this year.

WHAT’S YOUR HEALTH ISSUE IN 2013?

The five basic Chinese Elements represent different parts of the body – Water relates to the kidneys, the immune system, sexual organs, elimination and the urinary system.  Health problems related to Water could be kidney problems, sexual infections, inflammation of urinary tract, and bowel problems. Fire element is related to the heart and blood circulation.  The Fire emphasis can trigger serious heart or blood diseases as well as inflammation problems.  Also Yin Water is in clash with Yin Fire, the symbol of the heart and the brain which can cause heart attacks and strokes.  So its likely this will be more common in 2013.  In the previous Water Snake year of 1953, Joseph Stalin of the USSR suffered a stroke dying in March. He was born in 1878, a Tiger year, and the month he died was a Tiger month, creating a Fire penalty with the Snake.

Another very famous figure who died of the Fire element effect was Elvis Presley. He was born on a Monkey day, Tiger hour and he collapsed in his residence on 16th August 1977, a Snake year, Monkey month and Snake day. The multiple combinations of Snake, Tiger and Monkey in his Four Pillars with his terrible diet created serious inflammation and heart problems in his body.

With the Water Fire clash watch for heart, brain and eye health. For people who have problems with blood circulation and the heart, its best to take supplements such as Omega 3 & 6 oils, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E to assist circulation and prevent blockages.
WHICH WAY THE ECONOMY?

On the economy, the Fire element is a driving force behind the stock market.  Each of the Five Elements affects people’s moods.  Fire is joy, Water is fear, Earth is meditation and nurturance, Metal is sadness and Wood is anger. A Fire year then generates optimism and helps drive up the stock market, as in 2006/07.  In 2008 Water arrived causing fear and the USA sub-prime mortgage scandal began and recession set in.  In 2011, the Rabbit year was pure Wood, but was not as strong in generating Fire like the Tiger, so worries about the European economy came with troubles in Greece, Spain, Italy and Portugal and caused a setback in the second half of the year. Strong water coming in 2012 brought more setbacks. Since 2008 there has not been any real economic recovery as Fire has been absent.  However, the Fire Snake arriving in 2013 can bring genuine substantial improvement in our economic situation. This could be a year that the economic activities and stock market will be very active, particularly in spring and summer.
HOME & BUSINESS FENG SHUI MOVES IN 2013
In traditional Feng Shui assessments there are flying numbers called Flying Stars that arrive in different sectors of the house each year to influence a building’s good and bad fortune by interacting with the existing sector numbers. In the year of the Snake the Flying Star numbers that create challenges in your home will move on to new locations (see my 2012 Chinese Forecast). There are prosperous energies and the illness and breakdown energies. The good fortune numbers are 8 and 9 and the sickness numbers are 5 and 2. The two most weighty are the number 5 (called the Yellow Five), and the number 8 (called the White Star). These new numbers move into place on the 4th February each year, the beginning of the solar year, and its always good to have your remedies in place in the last weeks of January as their influence begins to grow from then.As Feng Shui energies change from year to year its necessary to watch for the reallocation of good and bad energies at the beginning of each year, and take precautions if the negative influence happens to land at important locations in home or office.
In the year of the Snake, the bad energy called “Yellow Five” – symbolising obstacles and misfortune, arrives in the Centre. This centre number often reflects the events focus prevailing in the year and the home and issues with money and assets may be the focus. Use Metal here with a set of six coins or a metal gong or bell here to sound at times. you can also hang six Chinese coins or use a saltwater cure which is a jar containing 6 metal coins and a tablespoon of salt in the water. In 2013 the Flying Star number 6, which symbolises Metal, the father, heaven and the law is in the NorthWest. this is quite positive and can lead to career advancement. The number 3 is in the East which means you need to use the colour red or burn candles to neutralise it. Its the angry aggressive star and can create problems with theft. Keep the area quiet and if its a main doorway try to avoid it and use other doors. The SouthWest has the number 2 Star which brings about gossip and back stabbing. To cut its effect use six metal coins tied together or a metal vase. Since the SouthWest is the relationship corner it often effects women of the house more. Make sure the area is kept quieter than before. Don’t use any of the doors here as much this year.

During 2013 the numbers 8 and 9 are found respectively in the NorthEast and the South of your house. With the number 8 in the NorthEast of your home, you can take advantage of it. If your office or main room is here then you can be blessed with an abundant flow of supportive energy this year. The NorthEast is ruled by the Earth element which is about education, storage, meditation, well-being, spiritual disciplines and younger men. To make it work avoid any blocking energies in those two sectors. Give them a good sweep out and clean all windows and doors. Get rid of clutter. If its appropriate, add flowing water to the NorthEast.

The other precaution to take relates to the direction of the year’s incoming energies from the yearly Snake, from the SouSouthEast. Its called the ‘Grand Duke’ and is like a military man on a horse riding towards you. Do not challenge him by facing his direction, but face to the other direction. If your office desk faces to the SouthEast turn it to another suitable position until the year is over. Its advisable to not do any renovations in the south-eastern part of your home for 2013. They may bring problems, poor luck or never be finished on time. The yearly prosperous numbers bring a positive effect on your house if they fall at the front door, the office or your bedroom and the illness numbers can bring health problems for you. Its advantageous to consult a Feng Shui practitioner to find out exactly where these energies are going to be this year and what impact they’ll have on the resident Flying Stars in your own home. What I’ve written here is a good beginning guide.

YOUR YEARLY ZODIAC FORECAST -  The CHINESE ZODIAC

The Zodiac sign which has the most trouble this year is the Pig which is in a direct clash across the zodiac with the Snake. These clashes usually bring about turbulence, accidents or changes.  People born in the year of the Pig will experience increased travel, or movements such as changing jobs or moving house.  Its important for them to carry the pendant of a Monkey as protection from the Snake energy. For the Pig people, the clash with the Snake can bring accidents related to fire or water, e.g., burning, boats sinking, accidents in the air or sea and possibly train travel. Doesn’t sound good does it?  For people who are in trouble with the year, its okay to travel more, make changes such as house moving, or change jobs. And for people born in the Pig year it is recommended not to travel directly towards the direction of the Grand Duke, which is the SouSouth East direction. .
