Should You Take a Nap?
Too many people these days react with shock if you suggest more sleep. Despite the fact that it’s proven to heal, energize, fight aging, boost immunity, and so much more, it’s ignored as a valid part of your overall healthy lifestyle.
Sleep has evolved into some sort of sign one is lazy rather than proactive about their health!
I may be shouting into the void here, but I’m going to take the importance of sleep one step further and tell you about the benefits of naps. Yes, naps!
Sleep Deprivation’s Effect on Your Body
Before you immediately think this article isn’t for you, trust me on this one. There’s nothing like a nap to completely recharge your entire day. In many cultures around the world, naps are a standard part of daily life and those people have markedly lower chronic stress.
Sleep deprivation has been linked to higher risk of cancer, heart disease, obesity, diabetes, neurodegenerative disease, depression, infection, and increased inflammation. Those are just a few examples of the toll lack of sleep takes on your body.
Inflammation is one of the biggest causes and effects of dozens of diseases and conditions according to hundreds of scientific studies.
Quality sleep has been proven – time and time again – to help minimize this threat to human well-being and lower your risk of countless other health problems. Scheduling (and sticking to) 8 hours of consistent sleep every night will change your life.
Unfortunately, the majority of Americans get 6.8 hours per day – and much of that isn’t quality sleep. How can you reverse some of the damage sleep deprivation does to your entire system? Naps are the answer!
The Benefits of Naps in 3 Ways
1. One type of nap is sleeping for around 15 minutes. It allows your mind to sink into light restful sleep which helps with overall cognition (memory and response) and alertness. If you allow yourself a little break, you’ll be ready to take charge of the rest of your day.   Not everyone can take advantage of this short-n-sweet method because it can take time to wind down your brain enough to relax. Listening to soothing meditation audio may help.
2. If you sleep for 30 minutes, your body gets more of a good thing. It allows you more light sleep but not too long. After half an hour, your body sinks into true, deep slumber. Keeping it under 30 minutes avoids feelings of grogginess or irritation afterwards.
This is an excellent choice for someone who tends to get the afternoon “dulls” (this happens about 6 hours after you wake up) when you can barely keep your eyes open.
Again, taking a nap might not be something you’re used to (it isn’t for most in the United States) and it could take time to train your brain to shut down for sleep. Meditation (audio-assisted or mental techniques) are a good workaround.
3. If you want the full benefits of naps, you want a nap that lasts around 90 minutes (or even a little more). This is the nap I’d suggest if you have a thought-intensive job, tend to lag in the last half of your day, or don’t always get the quality 8 hours at night.    For instance, if you have a new baby in the house and your sleep is often interrupted, a 90-minute nap can help alleviate the damage of on-going sleep deprivation. A nap can’t replace a good night’s rest but it can certainly help improve your focus if you’re not getting it and slow the long-term effects.
Prepare yourself for this kind of nap in the same way you’d prepare to sleep at night. Get comfortable, cool, and relaxedŠthen sleep your way to calm refreshment.
Giving yourself this little window to cycle down is going to change your life. Nothing boosts energy, alertness, and stamina like rest.

I could go on about the importance of sleep. I’ve written about this incredible (and overlooked) method of looking better, feeling better, and aging slower many times.
Naps are the natural extension of that philosophy but I know everyone is busy racing from one task to the next. Let me give you few more reasons to close your eyes for a little while.
Five Proven Benefits of Naps
        1.   Improve heart health. Sleep is a great way of managing stress effectively, lowering inflammation, and protecting your heart. Hypertension (high blood pressure) affects more than 1-in-3 American adults and one of the major causes of HBP is stress. Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is also worsened by stress and inflammation.
        2.   Better mood and attitude. No one intends to be cranky but sometimes, we just need a nap! There’s a reason irritable children are encouraged to sleep! If you’re feeling snappish and overly frustrated, give yourself some time to rest and reboot.
        3.   Control your weight. Sleep deprivation is connected to obesity according to several prominent weight-loss studies. A tired body produces more of a hormone called ghrelin and lowers your body’s production of leptin. Ghrelin tells your body, “I’m hungry.” Leptin tells your body, “I’m full.” When these are out of whackŠso is your weight.
        4.   Boost your memory. Each night when you sleep, your brain stores memories of the day. If you’ve crammed a lot of information – such as training, studying, writing a book, and so on – into your brain in the first half of the day, consider napping to “fix” it permanently in your long-term memories.
        5.   Live longer (no, seriously). The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released their findings that individuals who consistently get fewer than 6 hours of quality sleep each night have a higher risk of chronic disease and early death. There are other benefits of naps that haven’t been as well-researched as the points above such as having younger looking skin and increased libido.
One major area that a solid nap can help you is before you get behind the wheel of a car. The CDC reported that sleep deprivation played a part in “72,000 crashes, 44,000 injuries, and 800 deaths in 2013.” Their survey also found that far too many Americans fall asleep behind the wheel on a regular basis. This puts all of us at risk.
Until now, perhaps you considered a nap as something that was only for children. The fact is, too many adults are going without the true quality rest their bodies need to function properly.
You might be unwilling (or unable) to nap.
However, listening to your body is crucial. If you’re being plagued with severe headaches, feel “hungover” even if you haven’t been drinking, have moments of forgetfulness, or can’t concentrate and soak up the proven benefits of naps.

Magnesium deficiency is often misdiagnosed because it does not show up in blood tests – only 1% of the body’s magnesium is stored in the blood.

Most doctors and laboratories don’t even include magnesium status in routine blood tests. Thus, most doctors don’t know when their patients are deficient in magnesium, even though studies show that the majority of Americans are deficient in magnesium.

Consider Dr. Norman Shealy’s statements, “Every known illness is associated with a magnesium deficiency” and that, “magnesium is the most critical mineral required for electrical stability of every cell in the body. A magnesium deficiency may be responsible for more diseases than any other nutrient.” The truth he states exposes a gaping hole in modern medicine that explains a good deal about iatrogenic death and disease. Because magnesium deficiency is largely overlooked, millions of Americans suffer needlessly or are having their symptoms treated with expensive drugs when they could be cured with magnesium supplementation.

One has to recognize the signs of magnesium thirst or hunger on their own since allopathic medicine is lost in this regard. It is really something much more subtle then hunger or thirst but it is comparable. In a world though where doctors and patients alike do not even pay attention to thirst and important issues of hydration, it is not hopeful that we will find many recognizing and paying attention to magnesium thirst and hunger, which is a dramatic way of expressing the concept of magnesium deficiency.

After oxygen, water, and basic food, magnesium may be the most important element needed by our bodies; vitally important, yet hardly known. In fact, there happens to be a relationship between what we perceive as thirst and deficiencies in electrolytes. I remember a person asking, “Why am I dehydrated and thirsty when I drink so much water?” Thirst can mean not only lack of water but it can also mean that one is not getting enough nutrients and electrolytes. Magnesium, Potassium, Bicarbonate, Chloride and Sodium are some principle examples and that is one of the reasons magnesium chloride is so useful.

Symptoms of Magnesium Deficiency

The first symptoms of deficiency can be subtle – as most magnesium is stored in the tissues, leg cramps, foot pain, or muscle ‘twitches’ can be the first sign. Other early signs of deficiency include loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, and weakness. As magnesium deficiency worsens, numbness, tingling, seizures, personality changes, abnormal heart rhythms, and coronary spasms can occur.

A full outline of magnesium deficiency was beautifully presented in a recent article by Dr. Sidney Baker. “Magnesium deficiency can affect virtually every organ system of the body. With regard to skeletal muscle, one may experience twitches, cramps, muscle tension, muscle soreness, including back aches, neck pain, tension headaches and jaw joint (or TMJ) dysfunction. Also, one may experience chest tightness or a peculiar sensation that he can’t take a deep breath. Sometimes a person may sigh a lot.”

“Symptoms involving impaired contraction of smooth muscles include constipation; urinary spasms; menstrual cramps; difficulty swallowing or a lump in the throat-especially provoked by eating sugar; photophobia, especially difficulty adjusting to oncoming bright headlights in the absence of eye disease; and loud noise sensitivity from stapedius muscle tension in the ear.”

“Other symptoms and signs of magnesium deficiency and discuss laboratory testing for this common condition. Continuing with the symptoms of magnesium deficiency, the central nervous system is markedly affected. Symptoms include insomnia, anxiety, hyperactivity and restlessness with constant movement, panic attacks, agoraphobia, and premenstrual irritability. Magnesium deficiency symptoms involving the peripheral nervous system include numbness, tingling, and other abnormal sensations, such as zips, zaps and vibratory sensations.”

“Symptoms or signs of the cardiovascular system include palpitations, heart arrhythmias, and angina due to spasms of the coronary arteries, high blood pressure and mitral valve prolapse. Be aware that not all of the symptoms need to be present to presume magnesium deficiency; but, many of them often occur together. For example, people with mitral valve prolapse frequently have palpitations, anxiety, panic attacks and premenstrual symptoms. People with magnesium deficiency often seem to be “uptight.” Other general symptoms include a salt craving, both carbohydrate craving and carbohydrate intolerance, especially of chocolate, and breast tenderness.”

Magnesium is needed by every cell in the body including those of the brain. It is one of the most important minerals when considering supplementation because of its vital role in hundreds of enzyme systems and functions related to reactions in cell metabolism, as well as being essential for the synthesis of proteins, for the utilization of fats and carbohydrates. Magnesium is needed not only for the production of specific detoxification enzymes but is also important for energy production related to cell detoxification. A magnesium deficiency can affect virtually every system of the body.

One of the principle reason doctors write millions of prescriptions for tranquilizers each year is the nervousness, irritability, and jitters largely brought on by inadequate diets lacking magnesium. Persons only slightly deficient in magnesium become irritable, highly-strung, and sensitive to noise, hyper-excitable, apprehensive and belligerent. If the deficiency is more severe or prolonged, they may develop twitching, tremors, irregular pulse, insomnia, muscle weakness, jerkiness and leg and foot cramps.

If magnesium is severely deficient, the brain is particularly affected. Clouded thinking, confusion, disorientation, marked depression and even the terrifying hallucinations of delirium tremens are largely brought on by a lack of this nutrient and remedied when magnesium is given. Because large amounts of calcium are lost in the urine when magnesium is under supplied, the lack of this nutrient indirectly becomes responsible for much rampant tooth decay, poor bone development, osteoporosis and slow healing of broken bones and fractures. With vitamin B6 (pyridoxine), magnesium helps to reduce and dissolve calcium phosphate kidney stones.

Magnesium deficiency may be a common factor associated with insulin resistance. Symptoms of MS that are also symptoms of magnesium deficiency include muscle spasms, weakness, twitching, muscle atrophy, an inability to control the bladder, nystagmus (rapid eye movements), hearing loss, and osteoporosis.  People with MS have higher rates of epilepsy than controls.  Epilepsy has also been linked to magnesium deficiencies.

Turmeric Golden Milk – The Ancient Drink That Will Change Your Life

his Ayurvedic recipe uses two wonderful spices – turmeric and black pepper – and combines them into a healthy and delicious drink that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Turmeric originates from India, where it’s been used for centuries in cooking, health care and as a beauty product (check this turmeric face mask). Its active ingredient is called curcumin. When curcumin is combined with black pepper, its bioavailability significantly increases (read more about it in my previous post on how to optimise turmeric absorption for super boosted benefits).
The health benefits of golden milk
You can drink ‘golden milk’ every day and take advantage of the many health benefits attributed to the tasty beverage:
   *  It’s an antiseptic and an analgesic, so it helps with pain relief (find here more natural painkillers in your kitchen).
   *  It detoxes the liver and helps to purify the blood (find here more foods to cleanse your liver, and foods to cleanse your blood).
   *  It’s great for joint problems, such as osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
   *  It works well for different skin problems.
   *  It offers a general immunity boost and provides you with a good dose of antioxidants.
The following recipe is divided into two parts. First, we’ll look at how to make the turmeric paste. Then, we’ll use the paste to make the health-promoting golden milk.
Turmeric paste:
1/2  cup of clean water
1/4  cup of turmeric powder
1/2  teaspoon of ground pepper
Put the pan with water in it on a medium heat setting. Add turmeric and pepper and stir well, so you create a smooth paste. It takes about 7 to 9 minutes to get the paste properly cooked. If it becomes too dry, you can add some more water.
Turmeric has a very strong pigment, so protect your clothes in case it bubbles out.
Allow the mixture to cool down and then place it in a (preferably) glass container with an airtight lid. The paste will keep in the fridge for 2 to 3 weeks. After that, it develops a metallic taste, so you should avoid consuming it.
Some people take this paste directly, without making it into a concoction. It’s good for pain relief. For severe pain, it’s recommended to take half to 1 teaspoon of turmeric paste a day. The pain should subside after 3 to 4 days (also try this anti-inflammatory and pain relief ginger turmeric tea).
Golden milk
1/4 teaspoon (or more if you can tolerate the taste) of turmeric paste
1 cup almond milk (you can also use organic cow’s milk or other milk substitutes such as hemp milk, coconut milk, rice milk or oat milk)
1 teaspoon of coconut oil (you can also use sesame oil or sweet almond oil) – get unrefined, cold pressed oil
Some honey (or use another natural sweetener such as maple syrup, stevia)
Put milk and turmeric paste in a pot and cook on medium heat. Stir constantly and bring to a boil. Remove from heat. When the drink cools down, add honey and oil(s). The oil supplies you with healthy fats and further increases turmeric absorption. It helps with joint lubrication and promotes cellular function.
The drink has a nice golden color, hence its name.
**** NB****    A very small number of people have reported allergy to turmeric. If you’ve never eaten turmeric, start with a small dose and observe the body’s reaction.

Honey and Ginger Beat Antibiotics in Inhibiting Superbugs

And honey and ginger has been used as a healing combination for many conditions. But few realized just how antibiotic honey was – until recently.
Researchers from Ethiopa’s College of Medicine at the University of Gondar have determined that a combination of honey and ginger extract powder will inhibit the growth of superbugs such as MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae – some of the most lethal ‘superbugs’ known.The researchers conducted a laboratory study to test the inhibition ranges – using a standardized approach of measuring mean inhibition after culturing the bacteria in a broth solution and then using agar as a medium for measurement. The broths were cultured with the antibiotics for 20-24 hours to measure their effect upon the bacteria.The researchers separately tested Ethiopian honey, ginger powder and a combination of the two against three different antibiotics. The researchers also tested a water extract of the ginger.The antibiotics tested were methicillin, amoxicillin and penicillin – three of the most successful antibiotics in our pharmaceutical arsenal.
The researchers conducted five tests for each treatment. These included the following bacteria:
* Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and non-MRSA)
* Escherichia coli (two different strains)
* Klebsiella pneumoniaeThe research determined that both the honey and the ginger extract powder (alcohol extract) independently had greater inhibition levels than any of the antibiotics. The only antibiotic to come close to the inhibition of either of these was amoxicillin – which was close to the ginger extract. And this was only on the non-MRSA S. aureus. The ginger and the honey – each alone – beat out all three of these antibiotics in terms of mean inhibition levels.The numbers tell it all. Honey and ginger extracts each had an average mean inhibition of 19.23 among all five bacteria – ranging from 13 to 24.
Meanwhile the methicillin had an average mean inhibition of 4.00 (ranging from 0 to 13), amoxicillin had an average inhibition of 12.25 (ranging from 7 to 22) and penicillin had an average inhibition of 13.25 (ranging from 9 to 20).

And the combination of the ginger extract and the honey had even greater antibiotic properties, with mean inhibition levels averaging 25.62 and ranging from 19 to 30 – beating out all the pharmaceutical antibiotics by a landslide.

How was the ginger extract made?
The ginger extract powder was made by slicing ginger root and drying at 37°C for 24 hours. These dried ginger pieces were then ground and blended with methanol and ethanol. A 50% solution of ginger was the result.

The ginger extract powder was then blended with 100% honey at a one-to-one (50/50) basis.
The water extract of the ginger had no inhibition of the bacteria. This what other research has indicated – that alcohol apparently extracts the antibiotic constituents from the ginger.

The implications of this research are vast
The implications of this study are great. Both honey and ginger repel dangerous superbugs more than our most lethal antibiotics. These ‘superbugs’ have specifically armed themselves to counteract these overused antibiotics.

What about honey and ginger? Couldn’t these ‘superbugs’ eventually figure out how to counteract those treatments as well?
Nature works with completely different mechanisms than static antibiotics. How is that?
It is a fact that bacteria are always present around bee hives. Bacteria are also constantly present around the roots of a ginger plant – in the soil.
In fact, soils maintain some of the highest levels of bacteria.

So how did the honey and the ginger survive the bacteria onslaught before being harvested?
Living organisms are in constant motion. They are not static. Ginger plants, for example, are constantly producing their own antibiotic mechanisms to repel bacteria. These include producing acids that break down bacteria on contact. They also include using soil-based organisms to territorialize and inhibit bacteria invasion. These antibacterial measures that plants utilize are incorporated into the flowers where pollen is produced. This pollen is collected by bees and brought to the hive.

The bees also employ their own antibacterial measures to prevent infection in the hive. These include employing their own probiotic bacteria colonies and producing their own antibiotics which are secreted from their saliva. Propolis, in fact, is the product produced from the bee’s saliva and various plant resins. It has been shown to be significantly antibiotic. So why do these antibiotic strategies beat out antibiotics like methicillin, amoxicillin and penicillin? Because these pharma antibiotics are static. They work the same way every time.

This means that bacteria like MRSA staph and E. coli can figure out a workaround. They can figure out how those antibiotics work and just develop measures that counteract them. Then they pass on that workaround to other bacteria in the form of plasmids.

Why? Because bacteria are alive, and they want to survive.
But so do bees, and so do plants, and so do other organisms these utilize. And this creates a moving target.
We might compare it to two opposing nations. When one country produces a certain weapon, the other nation will produce another one to counteract it. Then they will produce a new one, which the first nation will develop a means to counteract it.

This mutual counteractivity produces something biologists call evolution. In each species’ quest to survive, their defense mechanisms evolve.
It is for this reason that using nature to help us counteract infection is far more sustainable than creating temporary, environment-polluting pharmaceuticals that only create resistant ‘superbugs’ in the end.
